Manananggal as the Muse

How a Filipino creature ruled by fear became the muse to transform into empowerment

The Aswang or the Manananggal is a vampiric creature in Filipino folklore that grows wings from its back and separates from its lower body to stalk victims at night so that it can feed on the organs or fetus of humans using its long tubular tongue.

How can this monster possibly be a muse?

Explore how this infamous creature became the heart and soul of Alex Cabal's work and how it also transformed her fears, pain, and despair into confidence, empowerment, and joy.

HEY,
I’m
Alex!

My love for the occult, esoteric, and monsters stemmed from all the spooky stories my Lola told me growing up as a child.

As an artist, art has become my devotion to the divine, my guides, and my ancestors where I explore the liminal space so that I can translate their messages and depict them in my art for the world to consume

frequently asked questions

Do i need to join live?

Nope! Anyone who joins live is also not obligated to stay the whole meeting. A recording will be sent to everyone who has bought a ticket.

why isn't it free?

With the rise of AI, unchecked forms of theft, and countless people literally stealing my work over the years, I am setting a boundary by creating a paywall.

Do i need to have previous knowledge about the culture to join this event?

No matter where you are along your journey, you are welcome. The doors are open to beginners and “experts” alike! This talk is mostly about MY personal experience and art process, so it's not necessarily a lecture.

When, where, and what time will this event be?

This will be a live online meeting via Zoom on Friday May 29 at 7pm PST.

Who is this for?

I wanted to make this Artist Talk for my fellow witches and weirdos who always felt like an outsider, for my fellow artists who feel stuck or lost in their journey and need a way to find the light at the end of the tunnel, and especially for my fellow Filipinos who want to feel seen and gain the permission and affirmation in reconnecting to the culture.

See you at the upcoming meeting
